Evolved Vitameatavegamin

It stands to reason that I ought to be able to get all the vitamins and minerals I need through proper diet. After all, we evolved in the Circle of Life as eaters of food, not poppers of pills. So if I'm not getting all I need, and I feel poorly as a result, there must be something wrong with what and how I eat. I should eat less junk, eat more healthy stuff, get in a wider variety of fruits and veggies, make sure there's a properly balanced amount of proteins and carbs and fats, drink more water, pay attention to what I eat in what order and which parts of the day, not too much of these fats but more of those, etc. etc. etc.

Then it occurred to me that it might not be me after all. It might actually be the food. In these modern times of crops grown in monocultures with artificial fertilizers and livestock fed highly controlled artificial diets, where large parts of the process are chock full of chemicals, how do I know that the original, natural range of nutrition is actually getting into the food at all?

So now I happily slurp down a spoonful of this tasty liquid multivitamin every day. Nature's Plus Source of Life Ultra (with lutein!) looks like concentrated pond scum - a blackish green. It tastes like mango long enough to get it past my tongue and down my throat before the strongly vitaminlike aftertaste sets in. And the first round or two of liquid out the other end is a dazzling, blindingly bright yellow. A spoonful just before bed means I sleep really well and wake up refreshed and alert, while a spoonful just out of bed means I can seriously carpe that diem instead of being all groggy and tired the whole time.

And every time I take some, I get to giggle thinking of this:

Unlike Lucy's Vitameatavegamin, mine doesn't have meat in it (safe for vegetarians!) and also omits the 23% alcohol. And it really does taste like candy. :)

So, in other words, you're farting rainbows. Excellent.

BTW, you need to keep that smiley interpretation guide up on the front page. If checked back to it 1/2 dozen times since you posted it.

I've been taking vitamins for years since I have a tendency towards anemia since I don't eat mammals. A regular multi-vitamin gives me just enough iron to keep my hemo levels normal. And that makes me happy.

But I take the pill form, because I almost always hate the flavors of that don't have their own flavor. (Exception? Dimetapp. Yum.)

And no one should forget calcium. Osteoporisis runs in my family, and as I'm already the second shortest person in the family, I don't need to get shorter. So even though I drink milk, I still take calcium.

Just to be safe.

Because who wants to be shorter?

And I think all vitamins make one's pee very vividly yellow. Works as a good reminder that you've remembered to take said vitamins. :)

Nathan: you could always put a link to it on your sidebar or something. ;)

Michelle: I can't do pills. I mean, I can swallow them ... if I want to start with a full glass of water and drink over half of it before I can convince the stupid pill to float far enough to go down my throat instead of hiding under my tongue. -.- Usually I don't get around to expending that much effort on a daily basis, so the liquid stuff is working out way better.

As for calcium, I'm addicted to coffee yogurt, and also get the calcium-enriched OJ (can't stand milk), so that's not a big problem.

In other news, MWT edits the smiley post with unflattering pictures of Puffy 4th Street...

I don't take vitamins, largely because I'm lazy and forgetful. I also forget my blood pressure medicine 3 out of very 4 days too. Which is actually not good at all.

I really should get some good vitamins. Pills work fine for me, I could swallow a Clydesdale's hoof with a little glass of water. Most pills with nothing.

PLUS, I could really write my name in the snow if I remembered to take my pills... That might be the motivation I need. ;)

Shawn!

Take your blood pressure pills!

Forgetting is BAD BAD BAD!

BAD Shawn! No biscuit! Take your meds!

I take a multi-vitamin (when I reember), because i'm not a huge fan of the fruits and veggies.

A multi-vitamin is my talisman against colds. If I feel the tickle in my throat, I take one and I don't get a cold. If I ignore it, I sometimes do.

I always attributed the neon pee to iodine in the pills.

Something that makes you feel perky in the morning is very very tempting! (I'm not a coffee drinker, so that's off the table.)

If there was enough Iodine in a vitamin to turn your pee yellow, you'd be dead and the pee would be leaking out. ;-)

It's the B vitamins that form a bright yellow complex with uric acid.

Do the B vitamins do beneficial things in the rest of the body first, before glomping the uric acid? Or does it just pass through without doing anything useful?

MWT: from Wikipedia:

The B vitamins often work together to deliver a number of health benefits to the body. B vitamins have been shown to:

Support and increase the rate of metabolism
Maintain healthy skin and muscle tone
Enhance immune and nervous system function
Promote cell growth and division — including that of the red blood cells that help prevent anemia.
Reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer, one of the most lethal forms of cancer[3], when consumed in food, but not when ingested in vitamin tablet form.[4][5]
Together, they also help combat the symptoms and causes of stress, depression, and cardiovascular disease.

All B vitamins are water soluble, and are dispersed throughout the body. Most of the B vitamins must be replenished daily, since any excess is excreted in the urine.[6] A six year cobalamin store can be found in the liver, despite its water soluble nature.

I find them to boost my energy levels and immune response, in non-controlled, self-inflicted clinical trials with an N of 1.
