My chiropractor tells me that when he recommends massage therapy to people, men tend to balk, thinking it in the same category of frivolous pampering as pedicures. Women tend to be much more amenable.
I liken it to taking the car into the shop for servicing. The car lasts longer when it gets regular care and maintenance. The body does too. Eating well, sleeping well, exercising and taking it in for regular checkups are all part of it - and sometimes, so are massages.

I'm in nearly constant pain these days, and I can't honesty say that I'd turn down a massage - if somebody else is paying for it. But, honestly, it only makes me feel better for a couple of hours, next day - same old, same old. So for me, it's just not worth it. Naproxin costs less and lasts longer.
Yeah, they're kind of expensive. My back and thigh muscles have a tendency to work themselves into permanent knots, though, so it's helpful to have someone unknot everything again. I wouldn't call it relaxing, and usually I'm sore all over the next day - but then I feel better after that.
I've been under a lot of stress these days, but today, after lunch, I saw a sign for a massage for $30. Very tempting... I wonder how long it is. At this point, almost anything would help.
Wooo. :) Might as well go for it. Chances are it's only half an hour though, if the masseuse is any good. Mine is basically $1/minute. Considering how much skill and hands-on effort is involved, though, that's reasonable.
You might also try finding a school that teaches massage therapy and let the students practice on you for much reduced rates.
